Tween the House and the Pool
HomeAid Orange County’s 19th Annual Project Playhouse raised $338,000 to help build and maintain housing in which homeless people can rebuild their lives. HomeAid developments range from emergency shelter, to transitional housing, to permanent supportive housing.
Kenneth McDonald Designs was privileged to be part of this design community fundraising program – providing the fabric used in the “playhouse for ‘tweens” that was sold at live auction last month as part of Project Playhouse. The playhouse was conceived as space for pre-teens to hang out – with a cool pool-house vibe and actual mosaic pools off the patio suitable for swishing toes on a hot day.
This stylized, 80-square-foot playhouse – with an 8-foot high open ceiling – came together through the best efforts of artists and industry serving a worthwhile charity. The sponsoring partner, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), actually served as inspiration to architect Ryan Ghere, who noted the leading design, safety principles and advanced technology currently being used in the hospital’s new tower. Framed on two sides by an innovative, transparent NanaWall® system, the indoor and outdoor areas become one.
The poolside flora came courtesy of Landscape Architect Kelly Rasmussen, who surrounded the playhouse with lush varieties of vegetation.
Interior Designer Laura Zublin of Selleck-Zublin Interior Design brought the sunny pool-side theme indoors through the use of yellow and blue décor. Classic comfort was the order of the day – with little touches of whimsy to add interest for its pre-teen occupants.
As members of the Orange County interior design community lucky enough to serve our upscale patrons, it is always good to remember the less-fortunate souls served by HomeAid Orange County.
KMD was proud to participate, and we thank all those who contributed so generously to this worthwhile project.
