The right to wear white.
The end-of-summer celebrations got us thinking this week about the age-old moratorium against wearing white after Labor Day. Is this a tradition that has outlived any practical sense of fashion relevance? Or is it akin to the grammatical rule about ending sentences with a preposition, i.e., it’s a nice idea to keep in mind, but don’t take it too seriously?
We loved the most recent blog by our friends at Kravet that addressed this same issue. They are bucking the trend and celebrating the timeless fashion statement made by wearing layers of crisp white button-downs and wooly winter white jackets. The Kravet blog pointed to a recent feature in Town & Country magazine with lavish photos of the elegant white-on-whites and neutrals featured in the LA home of Barbara Barry, whose fabric collection Kravet carries.
“Take a look at the LA home of Barbara Barry, the queen of luxury and understated elegance. These luxurious interiors layer white and neutrals for a look that is perfect any time of year. The warm LA sun combined with her signature crisp white interiors perfectly illustrates the feeling evoked by the late summer months.”
That inspired us to browse through the Kravet Couture samples, where we re-discovered some of our favorite Barbara Barry Collection designs.
Featured here is the Signature Sea Mist pattern. A cotton-linen blend, it’s a heavy-duty fabric that is finished with a Teflon treatment and, with a modest 5.5-inch repeat, adds that tiny bit of detail that can make layering in white so much fun.

We’re the ones in the corner, thumbing those exiting Barbara Barry fabrics. And and thumbing our nose at convention.
