Taking a healthy look at interior design.
If it feels as if there’s been a sudden bloom of medical centers and neighborhood clinics springing up in the area, it’s not your imagination.
As the first wave of baby boomers hit the big 60, it just makes sense. The convenience factor of having medical services available close to home is becoming increasingly important, as well as expected. One online resource estimates that up to 75% of surgery is now done on an outpatient basis.
These factors create an opportunity for interior designers specializing in healing environments.
For starters, all of these clinics need to attract and retain discerning clientele who may be shopping for the best place to go for elective or non-urgent procedures.
Secondly, the hospitals that are left carrying for patients with more urgent health needs often require a facility-facelift to help them meet the aesthetic demands of patients and professionals.
This can directly impact the facilities profitability, as evidenced by the growing trend in health facilities known as “evidence-based design.” For example, patients can recover more quickly, and even with less pain medication, when they have a great view and a quiet, soothing place to relax. Likewise, working in an attractive, functional environment can help the medical staff better deal with stress levels, which helps improve productivity and reduces costly turnover.
Evidence-based design is widely supported by the Center for Health Design – a nonprofit group based in Concord, California. To date, 44 health facilities have established a partnership with the Center for Health Design in this research effort.
Recently we blogged on two excellent sources for durable, hospital-friendly, contract-certified materials from Duralee and Maharam.
We find it encouraging that the medical community appreciates the healing nature of a sound design aesthetic. And we’re proud to offer a huge selection of fabrics and wallcoverings that meet all the requirements (including sustainability issues).
