Is your room full of light?
In our continuing story on trends, we pause to reflect … on reflective materials.
The ancient Roman author Aulus Cornelius Celsus left us several tedious volumes of medical procedure and this one juicy tidbit of practical advice: “Live in rooms full of light.”
From shimmering satin fabrics to metallic wallcoverings, interior designers have long known that rooms (and the people in them) come alive when we give the ambient light something to work with.
Hector Romero and Christopher Obeji, designers and owners of Wallteriors, work with light in much the same way as master painters and photographers. It shows in their amazing handcrafted wallcoverings, and also in their inventive installation recommendations.
In an earlier blog, we showed you their work at the 2010 Pasadena Showcase House – which included a satiny gold checkerboard ceiling.
Here’s another excellent example – their Constellations collection – created with completely natural, light-reflecting Mica chips. Offered in five twinkling hues, each takes its name from an appropriate heavenly body – “Andromeda” is a modern, silvery white; “Ursa Minor” is a succulent pale green; “Lyra” is delicate, baby-blanket pink; “Centaurus” looks like the sea in an early morning mist, with a soft gray-blue; and our favorite, “Orion”, offers up a sophisticated shade of brown that just glistens with possibilities.
Of course, to really catch the light and make it dance across the room, Wallteriors shows us how to lay the paper in interesting, unexpected ways – for example, as square tiles diagonally stacked to really work the Mica flecks. All materials are pre-cut and finished by the Walleriors studio artisans – so ease of installation and a professional finish are guaranteed.
Best of all, these new wall coverings are completely eco-friendly, easily washable and a snap to install.
