Tough love for commercial wallcoverings.
We noted in a previous blog that wallpaper has made a huge comeback because of the exciting new products available for adventurous residential designs.
Here’s more news on that news front.
More and more, interior designers are embracing wallpaper for universities, schools, hospitals, day care centers, nursing homes and medical offices.
What gives?
The wallpaper.
In these commercial buildings, the walls take a beating from wheelchairs, catering carts, gurneys, strollers, and various equipment trolleys, so that they quickly show chips, skid marks and scratches from the daily abuse. Painting – and frequently repainting – can get expensive. And just “touching up” rarely works.
This gives the edge to modern wallcoverings, which can be easy to wash and fairly “ding resistant.” And if gouged, stripping and replacing a patch of wallpaper is a fairly simple process.
Of course, it helps that the selection of handsome commercial patterns is virtually limitless. Even in designs that invite easy patching.
A good place to start your search is with the line of high-performance wallcoverings from the Maharam Design Studio.
We opened the book at random and found exciting options with a stain-resistant finish that hold up to wiping, vacuuming, or washing with water-based cleanser or even diluted bleach. The sample selection pictured above, Caliber006 Haystack, is offered in nine complementary shades, is Class A fire rated, uses 39% Post-Consumer Recycled Polyester, follows environmentally improved manufacturing processes, and is certified for indoor air quality.
And that’s tough to beat.
