Feelin' groovy.
Have you seen the book David Hicks (A Life of Design) lovingly put together by his son, Ashley?
David Hicks was one of the most famous and influential Interior Designers of the 20th Century. His unique vision and inimitable style, using luxurious lacquered walls, dramatic lighting, pattern on pattern, and a fearless use of color, stand today as a rich and enduring legacy. He created sophisticated and elegant interiors for a varied and interesting clientele, from Kings and Princess, to leaders of industry and commerce.
The book is a brilliant reminder (not that we needed one) that the 1960s were much more than a time of self-indulgent exploration and experimentation. Consider the music, the fashions, the films, the furniture, the industrial design – for the most part, the work holds up.
For the interior design world, in which the late David Hicks spun at the epicenter, the once staid community let down its collective hair and got funky – mixing patterns, time periods, materials, and colors in fresh, breathtaking ways.
Ironically, what was then the counterculture now sets the established tone.
This got us thinking about fabrics that are in our showroom right now that would stand up to the David Hicks sensibility. There are more fabulous designs than we can possibly list, but here’s something that has the certain stamp of approval: the new David Hicks fabrics, distributed worldwide by Lee Jofa/Kravet.
Designed by Ashley Hicks, these fabrics combine his father’s strongly graphic style and powerful color sense with a gentler and more usable contemporary style. Designs range from punchy geometrics to stylized floral motifs, in luxurious qualities ranging from sheers and printed linens to cut velvet and flocked taffeta silk.
The design revolution lives!
