Dodge the draft.
We don’t often have cause to complain about the winter weather here in Sunny Southern Cal. But the burst of low temperatures that followed Thanksgiving got us thinking about the insulating properties of rich, lined or even layered window treatments.
Of course, we are spoiled by thermo-pane windows and the like … but even draft-free windows can generate cold.
Real, or imagined.
When you think about it, it’s easy to figure out that lined draperies were the first form of insulation. Just think of all those lovely old tapestries you’ve seen hanging in museums or in castle tours. Back when “windows” were just glorified slits in the stone walls, the practical habit of hanging oiled cloth over them in the winter months evolved into a medieval aesthetic movement.
Today, we still appreciate the insulating properties of well-constructed draperies – whether it’s to keep out chilly drafts, scorching sun, or even prying eyes.
The best way to improve in all of these areas is to use lining. The additional layer provides a substantial improvement in the window’s insulation factor for both temperature and noise. Additional finishes and drapery layers can heighten the effect. And as a bonus, linings can protect the face fabric from moisture and sun damage, extending its life span.
We have a huge selection of drapery fabrics that can be paired with compatible linings for residential or commercial use.
